I know you have all been anxiously awaiting an update and here it is. Kate went into surgery a little after 7:00 this morning and was done around 3:00 this afternoon. Everything went well and was just a little bit longer than they expected. In a very simplistic explanation both the greater arteries and the coronary arteries had to be switched and some work had to be done on the coronary arteries as they hadn't developed properly. Kate did very well throughout the surgery and Cheryl and Mike were able to see her a little before 6:00 PM. They said that she is pale and quiet and the nurses were working to get all of her vital signs stable. This is standard for a baby right out of surgery and the nurses reported that things were looking good. The next 48 hours are the most critical time and Cheryl and Mike will only be able to see Kate for a few brief minutes every hour or so during the day. After 48 hours if everything looks good they will close up Kate's chest and then continue to monitor her progress. They expect she will be in the hospital at least another 4 weeks if all goes as planned. Keep up all the positive thoughts and prayers until she comes home!
For those of you new to reading blogs you are able to leave comments for Cheryl and Mike. At the bottom of each update you will see a small caption that says comments. Click on the word comments and a new window will open up. In that window there will be a box where you can type your message. It will ask you to sign in to your account but you can choose anonymous and then you don't have to create an account at all. If you choose anonymous then don't forget to leave your name after your message or Cheryl and Mike won't know who the message is from!
We leave you now with a few more pre-surgery pictures!

Hi guys!
We've been checking the blog from here in Germany every day and we're so happy that Kate made it through the surgery ok. We continue to hope and pray that she'll be able to come home soon, because we can't wait to meet our newest neighbor! Take care and we'll see you soon. John and Niki

We can't wait to see our new cousin. We are so glad she is doing well. Grace says she prays for Kate in her mind all day long. Hannah tells everyone at school to pray for baby Kate. Elijah is the worry wart and worries between prayers. Nick keeps his thought to himself while Ellen has her youth group praying for Kate. But our most special time is when we all join hands and pray together for our precious Kate that we can't wait to meet and hold. Stay strong and know that we love you all.
God Bless all of you! Cheryl is looking good & Baby Kate is a doll. Mike - your mother called this morning to pass on the good news. She was very excited about the baby. We also think Kate looks like Mike except she has more hair than you do at this time.
Love & Hugs all around,
Aunt Phillis & Uncle Ralph
We are thinking about you and praying for a smooth recovery. You guys are amazing parents!
